DSD Mask Policy

The Dover School District Board of Education met on August 12, 2021 to discuss the use of face masks for staff and students.

The board reviewed the results of a survey that was sent out to parents and guardians this week to determine if our families felt masks should be required for staff and students in order to add protection against the spread of COVID-19. The results of the survey are in the photos below. With 396 respondents, the survey showed that 54.8% felt that masks should not be required, and 45.2% felt that masks should be required. The board also opened up a portion of the meeting for public and school staff comments to all who wished to address the board with concerns.

Due to the polarizing nature of this subject as evidenced by public comment and the survey results, the DSD Board of Education elected to approve a mask policy that will be based on current active cases within school buildings.

If an individual school building has less than 5 active student and/or staff cases, masks will be highly recommended when indoors and/or in areas when physical distancing cannot occur. If that school reaches the 5 active case threshold, masks will be required for all staff and students in that school building for a minimum of 14 consecutive days. At the end of that required mask period, if cases have fallen below 5, the masking status will return to "recommended." If cases are still at or above the threshold at the end of the 14 day period, an additional 14 days will be added, and cases will be reassessed again at the end of that period. (Examples are listed in a graphic below.)

If any school is under required mask status, ALL staff and students on school buses will be required to wear a mask while on the school bus.

Masks will be recommended at all indoor and outdoor extra-curricular events.

Current case counts and the mask status will be posted on our webpage, and we will routinely update on Facebook, as well. We are thankful for all of our staff, families, and community members who gave us valuable feedback on this issue. Your understanding of the difficulty of this decision and your relentless support make Dover THE best community around. Thank you!
